Job Summary

The School of Education at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) invites applicants for one full-time, tenure-track, Assistant Professor position beginning August 2025 with requirements to be physically present on campus. This is an exciting opportunity to join a large and diverse school that is home to approximately 1,200 students in six program areas: 1) Elementary Education, 2) Special Education, 3) Secondary Alternate Route, 4) Higher Education Administration, 5) Educational Administration, and 6) Educational Research.

Our faculty have established scholarship records in leadership development, conflict management, and school board-superintendent relations. While the research area of specialization for this position is open, we are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in analyzing P-12 achievement data, educating diverse learning populations, fostering community and stakeholder relations, and developing operational best practices for school leaders. We offer Specialist and Doctoral degrees that prepare leaders for both building-level and district-level positions. Our institution provides robust support for research and professional growth, including access to research centers and funding opportunities. We seek applicants committed to producing impactful research while preparing doctoral students to become thoughtful, productive researchers and practitioners. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research that impacts educational policy and practice as well as contributes to the research and teaching missions of the School of Education at the graduate level.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

1. Developing a strong independent research program.

2. Seeking external funding.

3. Teaching and mentoring students across programs.

4. Contributing to the program and profession through service activities.

5. Performing other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

* Doctoral degree in Educational Administration or Educational Leadership (by August 2025).
* Exhibits the potential for a strong research agenda
* At least five years of experience in a leadership role in K-12 education



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Knowledge of P-12 Leadership theory or research associated with building/district level leadership.
* Knowledge of principles governing P-12 operations.
* Knowledge of laws governing P-12 operations.
* The ability to deliver accurate, concise and quality communication (verbal and written) in a timely manner to a diverse population.
* The ability to set clear performance expectations and provision of meaningful feedback.
* The ability to use technology in the online learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience teaching students in an online learning environment within Educational Administration at the university level.
* Active principal and/or superintendent license
* Experience in P-12 administration at the district level.
