It’s a great time to join the City of Boulder!Application Deadline:January 11, 2025Compensation Details:Hiring Range27.15 - 39.37This is a full-time hourly position.Scheduled Weekly Hours:40Benefit Eligibility Group:BMEA (20+ Hours)Locate the Benefit Eligibility Group value on the Employee Benefit Eligibility document to identify the benefits offered for this job.Job Description Summary:The OSMP Crew Lead role provides support and leadership to execute trail program objectives as well as department wide plans that support all charted land uses and open space purposes. Crew leads are responsible for field and project management, skills development, and administrative and logistical support of their crew and overall trails program. The Trail Crew Lead is expected to perform and guide others in trail construction and maintenance under minimal supervision. As a Crew Lead, you will coordinate and direct work with other agency partners such as OSMP Jr. Rangers, conservation corps crews, volunteers, and other groups and individuals assigned to trail projects. This position requires hiking up to 10 hours per day, carrying a backpack and hand tools, and working outside in inclement weather and in mountainous terrain. Job Description:ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESProject and Personnel Management Directs crew to complete routine maintenance, repair and construction on trails and related structures and facilities Provide field support, training, and comprehensive performance evaluations to crew Conduct daily safety briefings and complete safety logs. Ability to stay engaged and motivate others with the task at hand for up to 10 hours at a time, especially when tasks are repetitive and physical in nature. Maintain regular communication on status of projects with project managers and supervisors Mentoring Staff Develop and facilitate on-the-job tool training, leadership, and team development activities to crews and other agency partners Deliver instruction on specialized skills such as rigging, dry stone construction, carpentry, and mechanized equipment. Openly shares successes and challenges to support team learning and individual growth. Reporting & Communications Record daily work completed using asset management software Take before and after photos of projects Communicate project timeline, deliverables, and progress to project managers and supervisors Create end of project reports that highlight challenges and work completed Other Takes proper safety precautions to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment and follows all safety regulations, policies and procedures. Reports all accidents and damage to city property. Knowing all policies inclusive of safety and reporting any damage or infractions. Ability to take initiative: Identifies what needs to be done and does it before being asked or before the situation requires it. Completes work in a timely and consistent manner. Ability to represent the City of Boulder and Open Space and Mountain Parks with integrity when interacting with the public and project partners. Ability to perform risk and hazard analysis and implement proper safety controls; ability to judge weather conditions. Adheres to department and program policies in regards to safety. Knowledge and familiarity with project management and variables involved including time, resources, standards, and responding to unexpected events. Ability to recognize needs, assess possible methods to meet needs, and act on solutions.Skills in written and oral communication: Develop and relay daily work plans to crews and partners to ensure that directions and expectations of quality are being met. Listens to concerns and is open to the ideas of colleagues. Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the public and coworkers, with excellent customer service skills. Valid driver’s license and ability to maintain an acceptable motor vehicle record. Have and maintain an acceptable background information including criminal history is required. PREFERRED QUALFICATIONS Ability to operate and use specialized equipment including trail dozers, excavators, power carriers, gas powered rock drills/breakers, winch and rigging equipment, chainsaws, grinders and sharpening tools, etc. REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEOne (1) season of experience supervising work crews completing natural resource management or land management field tasks. Physical and Mental Effort: Physical Demands and Mental Effort: Ability to perform a wide range of physical and manual tasks in an outdoor environment. Physical ability to stand, bend, walk, and kneel. Ability to carry up to 40 pounds while hiking on rough terrain. Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities that permits the employee to communicate effectively on the telephone and in person. Sufficient vision or other powers of observation that permits the employee to review, evaluate and prepare a variety of written documents and materials. Sufficient manual dexterity that permits the employee to operate computer equipment and other office equipment. Work may include extended periods of time viewing a computer video monitor and/ or operating a keyboard. Ability to work under stress from demanding deadlines, public contact, and changing priorities and conditions. Work Environment: Works primarily in an outdoor environment year- round. Potential exposure to dangerous wildlife (e.g., rattlesnakes, mountain lions, stinging insects), toxic chemicals (e.g., pesticides), and dangerous weather conditions (e.g., heat, cold, lightning). Machines and equipment used: Frequently uses standard office equipment including personal computers, calculators, cell phones, and copy machines; vehicles including four-wheel drive vehicles; a range of relevant and appropriate tools and equipment.
