The Emergency Short Stay Unit (ESSU) at John Hunter Hospital is dedicated to providing high-quality, short-term care for patients requiring observation, treatment, and stabilization before discharge or transfer. Our ESSU handles a diverse patient population with a variety of medical conditions, ensuring a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.
We pride ourselves on our exceptional team culture, which offers robust support during your transition into the unit. Each shift, you will be guided by a Clinical Nurse Unit Manager, alongside a dedicated team of Clinical Nurse Educators, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Nurse Practitioners. Our ESSU operates as a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary team, involving not only doctors and nurses but also administration staff, social workers, physiotherapists, pharmacists, occupational therapists, and invaluable ancillary staff. Together, we ensure the seamless functioning of the ESSU, characterized by a patient-centered approach that fosters a dynamic and cohesive work environment.
The ESSU benefits from the oversight of a Nurse Unit Manager, Medical Co-Directors, and an Operational Nurse Manager for Critical Care, ensuring comprehensive leadership and support.

John Hunter Hospital currently undergoing a $835 million redevelopment project known as the John Hunter Health & Innovation Precinct, it is an exciting time to join the team. Level 6 Emergency Department:
Our department specialises in trauma, neurosurgical emergencies, neurology patients (including acute stroke), major orthopaedic, cardiology and cardiothoracic cases, and paediatric/adolescent mental health. With over 85,000 presentations annually, our ED is one of the busiest mixed Adult/Paediatric Tertiary Referral Centres in Australia and the only Trauma Referral Centre in NSW outside of Sydney.
