Interdisciplinary (Historian/Cultural Anthropologist/Archeologist)

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-11/25/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the number of hours worked per week, full-time, or part-time. If you indicate part-time, you MUST indicate the number of hours worked per week so that your qualifying experience can be prorated for credit. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each Federal position being used towards experience, as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. This is an interdisciplinary position which may be filled in any of the following occupational series: Historian, GS-0170; Cultural Anthropologist, GS-0190; Archeologist, GS-0193. You will only be considered for the series you apply to and are qualified for. You may apply to multiple series. IMPORTANT: It is your responsibility to clearly show in your application package how you satisfy the below requirements. If you do not provide transcripts and/or documentation that clearly show how your completed college coursework and/or experience meets all of the requirements, you will be rated ineligible. Your rating will be based solely on the information you submit with your application. Candidates who do not meet these requirements by close of this announcement will receive no further consideration for this position. To qualify for this position, you must possess one of the following basic qualifications by close of the announcement: Basic Requirements for Historian, GS-0170: A Bachelor or higher degree in history or a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history. -OR- A combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, plus appropriate experience or additional education. -OR- Basic Requirements for Cultural Anthropologist, GS-0190: A Bachelor or higher degree in an appropriate field of anthropology. -OR- A combination of education and experience in courses equivalent to a major in an appropriate field of anthropology, or a combination of courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in an appropriate field of anthropology, or related coursework, plus appropriate experience or additional education. -OR- Four years of appropriate experience in anthropology performing research, museum work, or similar professional-level work. -OR- Basic Requirements for Archeologist, GS-0193: **If using an option that requires archeological field school to qualify, ensure your transcripts and/or resume indicate completion.** A Bachelor or higher degree that includes 3 semester hours each in the following 5 course areas: 1) History of archeology; 2) Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating and analytical techniques; 5) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. IN ADDITION, six semester hours of related coursework in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying. AND archeological field school. -OR- A degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic coursework sufficiently similar to the requirements stated directly above in option one for the GS-0193 series (including archeological field school). -OR- A combination of college-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described above in option one for the GS-0193 series, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. -OR- Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher-grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project. - AND - In addition, to qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors) that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience may include: conducting or leading historic, archeological, anthropological, or ethnographic research; providing consultative services on matters related to archeological and historic resources; monitoring or surveying archeological sites, historic structures, and cultural landscapes; developing cultural resources or historic preservation planning documents; consulting with affiliated tribes and State Historic Preservation Offices; or supporting projects through the compliance process and completing required documentation under the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA). You must include hours worked per week in your resume. Volunteer experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
