Reporting to the School Principal, the Food Service Worker is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the school cafeteria providing and maintaining a safe and clean environment, with prompt, friendly service, while upholding Grasslands values. Please note: this position is under temporary contract, duration of this position could be shortened or extended based on the return of the person being replaced. The Brooks Composite High School (BCHS) is a high school of approximately 700 students in grades 10-12. We offer a full range of all the academic offerings in addition to a well-respected vocational program that includes Mechanics, Construction, Cosmetology, Foods and Digital Media. We also offer a fine arts program that includes visual arts and performing arts including Music and Drama. In addition, we are pleased to host the district Inclusive Education Program and have a large ELL program that serves the needs of many newcomers to Canada. We are also very proud of the athletic and extracurricular programs at our school. We run a number of teams and clubs that provide students a great number of opportunities to participate in the life of the school. Job Duties: Perform tasks related to the preparation and operation of the cafeteria and the preparation of meals: Assist/prepare menus in accordance with established practices and standards; Assist/prepare and cook complete meals, including meats, fish, vegetables and various other foods; prepare salads, bake bread, rolls, cookies and other pastry/dessert items; Operate and maintain a variety of kitchen equipment; Maintain inventory levels (food/supplies) and order same in accordance with estimated needs; Establish and maintain a stock rotation system to minimize loss; Check and verify receipt of goods; Maintain the required standard in the preparation and serving of meals. Ensure that kitchen equipment and supplies used to perform duties are stored and maintained in a neat and orderly manner. Research and recommend new food items to the daily menus as required, ensuring that all daily menus and foods provided are nutritionally balanced; Submit reports of damages or any other requirements for repair as they occur. Perform all other such duties as may be assigned by the supervisor with new and unusual matters referred to a supervisor for guidance. Handle all products safely and follow safety procedures prior to using any new products Complete daily, weekly, and monthly duties as outlined assigned, to ensure a clean and safe environment. Able to perform tasks, on every shift, that may be physically demanding that includes but not limited to; climbing and balancing; stooping, kneeling, bending, turning, and reaching; lifting, carrying, pulling and pushing; and prolonged standing. Able to conduct oneself in a responsible and respectful manner with students, school staff, and visitors, third parties, that is in alignment with division’s policies, guidelines and values. Able to operate a variety of kitchen and food preparation tools/equipment and assemble and disassemble according to safety procedures and protocols. Self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision, while working independently or on a team, which requires strong communication and interpersonal skills, organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple demands. Able to ensure that safe working procedures and conditions are always adhered to and follow all Food Safety and OH&S protocols. Able to effectively communicate while working independently, or with a team, to ensure safe work practices.
