Job Description

NATIONAL OCEANOGRAPHY CENTRE

NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS

Meetings are predominantly held in Southampton with flexibility for some to be held in other parts of the UK including Liverpool

The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) undertakes world leading research in large scale oceanography and ocean measurement technology innovation, working with government and business to turn great science and technology into advice and applications.

As one of the world leaders in marine science, we have responsibility for leading and providing the UK National Capability on behalf of the UK Government and the marine research community. This includes managing the National Marine Equipment Pool – Europe’s largest fleet of autonomous and robotic vehicles, and two state of the art research ships: RRS Discovery and RRS James Cook.

Through our trading subsidiary, NOC Innovations Ltd, we provide a vital link between science and business, enabling technology and research to transfer to industry and for revenue to be generated to support our charitable purposes.

We also support scientists in universities and research institutes, enabling the UK to harness the full power and diversity of its ocean science talent. We work collaboratively with over 40 other UK marine institutions and facilitate international co-operation in science by leading the UK delegation of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO, through our membership of the European Marine Board, and through partnerships with other research institutions and organisations worldwide.

An independent charitable organisation, we have a skilled and experienced Executive team and Board, supported by high calibre colleagues across Southampton, Liverpool and on our research ships.

We are now seeking three new Non-Executive Directors to join NOC’s Board and contribute to our purpose of gaining deeper knowledge of the ocean to help every living thing on our planet flourish.

Ideally, two of these individuals will be from the scientific community, particularly those experienced in the interface between science/research and the Government. One of these will shadow the current Chair of our Scientific and Advisory Committee with a view to taking on this role after a period of time.

We would like our third Non-Executive Director to bring a commercial background and to shadow the current Chair of NOC Innovations Ltd., to help us continue to grow, innovate, and balance commercial success with our impact in developing the world’s understanding of the oceans.

Previous experience as a Non-Executive Director is desirable but not essential, and we welcome interest from those who have not previously served on a Board of Trustees.

These roles are initially for a 3-year term and require an average time commitment of 2 days a month.

NOC is keen to ensure that the Trustee Board is inclusive and representative of the communities in which NOC works. Expressions of interest are encouraged from groups under-represented in our current Board composition.
