The University of Strathclyde is looking to appoint a Porter to support our conferencing and events activity within the Technology & Innovation Centre (TIC). The Technology & Innovation Centre (TIC) is the University’s flagship research facility, opened by HM The Queen in July 2015. TIC is home to £11m of dedicated, flexible conferencing facilities, and has quickly established itself as one the country’s most popular venues for business events and academic meetings, hosting more than 600 events and 42,000 delegates in academic year 2022/23 alone. The Conference Porter will play a key role in ensuring that our clients’ events are delivered effectively and to a standard which is genuinely world-class.



Working across the Conferencing & Events and TIC Operations teams, the Porter will be central to day-to-day operations. The successful candidate should have experience of working in a similar environment, such as a conference center, banqueting suite, hotel or performance venue. The role will involve:



• setting up and turning around rooms and foyer spaces to the layout required by clients

• storing equipment and furniture securely and appropriately when not in use

• receipt, delivery and safe handling of all materials relating to conferences and events taking place in the facility

• supporting the movement of goods and furniture throughout the building

• assistance with wayfinding in the building and giving information on general use of the facilities

• ensuring that conferencing and event spaces are kept are well-maintained, tidy and presentable at all times, befitting to a five-star conference venue

• weekly fire safety and first aid checks for all conferencing and event space



As well as experience of providing a customer-focused support service, the successful candidate will have existing knowledge and a keen awareness of the importance and day-to-day application of key health and safety and manual handling procedures. This post will involve a high volume of manual handling on a daily basis, and the successful candidate will ideally hold a valid manual handling certificate, and be able to contribute to the ongoing and consistent application and development of our safe working practices and standard operating procedures.



The post-holder will be required to work 35 hours per week, 5 days over 7. Shift patterns will depend on the needs of the business, but will regularly include hours outside the normal working week, i.e. early mornings, evenings and weekends, throughout the year. A 5% premium will be added to the salary of the successful candidate to reflect this non-standard working pattern.



This post will be key to the delivery of a high level of customer service in TIC, and will require an individual interested in working with a wide range of people, problem solving and willing to be flexible in their approach to the work.
