Who You Are



  • Substantial experience in motor vehicle technology, particularly with cars, light goods vehicles, municipal vehicles, and parks equipment.

  • Practical experience in hydraulic, welding, and electrical repairs.

  • Skilled in diagnostics for vehicle repair and maintenance.

  • Flexible and adaptable to changing work environments and shift patterns to meet customer needs.

  • Capable of working under/on vehicles at varying heights and in confined spaces, including accessing inspection pits via ladders.

  • Proficient in using computer systems for recording work and vehicle history checks.

  • Team-oriented and willing to work collaboratively with colleagues.

  • Desirable: Qualified VOSA MOT tester for class 4 and 5A, and holder of an LGV class C driving license.





What the Job Involves



  • Maintaining, servicing, and repairing various types of vehicles, plant, and equipment as per the Council’s scheduled program.

  • Conducting risk assessments, creating safe work systems, and performing regular safety inspections.

  • Liaising with external suppliers to maintain best value in goods and services.

  • Managing stock levels and ensuring appropriate service/repair items are available.

  • Providing roadside assistance and arranging vehicle/plant recovery when necessary.

  • Diagnosing faults and specifying necessary work on job cards for contractors or in-house workshop teams.

  • Performing general fleet electrical work, welding, fabrication, and minor repairs.

  • Inspecting vehicles post-contractor work to ensure satisfactory and safe standards.

  • Conducting statutory vehicle testing for members of the public and issuing appropriate certificates.

  • Implementing seatbelt checks in line with VOSA regulations and collecting associated fees.

  • Inspecting new, hired, and added vehicles/plant to the Council’s fleet and maintaining data sheets.

  • Advising on and inspecting workshop equipment, lifting gear, and special tools before use.

  • Maintaining cleanliness and tidiness of the workplace and assisting with steam cleaning Council vehicles and plant.

  • Working according to the shift system with prior notice and consultation.
