About the Year in Industry:

We have an exciting new position created to offer students the chance to complete a Year in Industry placement within the Operations Function.

Operations supports AWEs mission by taking the demand from our customer programmes to deliver the products and services they need to fulfil the needs of the Defence Nuclear Organisation (Ministry of Defence) in maintaining our national security.

We have a diverse range of products across Operations from a technical report, to experimental tests, to a fully assembled nuclear warhead. Operations is also responsible for keeping our sites open, safe and secure.

This role will be within Non-Nuclear Operations and Transport Group.

This group provides policy, standards, competency and processes to support the accountancy, control of components and other special materials. They maintain and manage the Logistics and Material programme deliverables, ensuring that all cycle count activities are initiated in accordance with the audit plan.

They provide suitably qualified & experienced material control staff in facilities to ensure that movement of all material is conducted in a safe and secure manner, complying with authorized processes and regulations for transportation internally, nationally, internationally and dangerous goods. To oversee accountancy.

  • Leading, coaching and developing a team of material Controllers to effect material control operations - goods in processing, warehousing, distribution and verification activities.
  • Material Control interface and logistics liaison with customers and suppliers in all aspects of logistics and material management activities accountable for.
  • Whether supporting the program or operational need ensure that through life plans for material and components are enacted as well as maintaining stock replenishment mechanisms.
  • Support each business area through knowledge, systems available and other subject matter expertise for the identification of components.
  • Management of Company vehicles (fleet) within area of responsibility - transport liaison officer (TLO) including the vehicle refuelling point. Management of POL Station including monitoring and fuel usage levels (where applicable).
  • Supporting the disposition process through sentencing ensuring that formal process is adhered to and that accurate record keeping on corporate systems as items are dispatched for disposal.

You will be fully trained and undergo a thorough induction process when working in the operations function.

Those working in the Non-Nuclear Operations and Transport Group a full UK driving license would be beneficial.

What disciplines may fit this role best?

All degrees considered, but a keen interest in systems, logistics, process, planning would be useful in this area.

Location:You will be based at Aldermaston, nr. Reading, Berkshire

Starting date

Undergraduate Placement Induction start date will be August 2025, please avoid taking leave during this period if you are successful. This role is offered on a 12-month contract.

Please note you must be a UK national holding a UK passport to be eligible to apply to AWE. You must have lived in the UK for 10 years to apply for DV clearance for this role.

Application Process

If eligible you will be invited to complete online testing against various numerical, verbal, logical and cognitive reasoning tests, you will be given access to practice ahead of completing them.

Those successful at testing will be invited to our virtual assessment centres running throughout the period 14th October to 14th December 2024, and early into January 2025. We will be hosting pre-assessment centre webinars to provide guidance on what to expect.

We recruit on a rolling basis which means as soon as our positions have been filled, the scheme will close to new applications. So, please apply as soon as possible to avoid missing out!

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role. Please note that you must be a British National to apply for a role with us.
