Job Description

DescriptionA unique opportunity has arisen for an Instructor in UPS that has an additional specialism of outdoor education and leadership. The College runs a successful UPS course with a vast array of alumni to be fully-equipped for their chosen public service careers. We seek an enthusiastic individual who works hard for the Department and is committed to the success of the their learners. You will instruct groups of students and assess their skills in Outdoor Adventurous Activities. To enable students to learn and achieve and to maintain equipment to high standards to meet all health and safety requirements.

Duties1. To be responsible for the instruction of students in high quality outdoor adventurous activities

2. Supervision, assessment, evaluation, training and monitoring of students working in outdoor adventurous activities (in line with awarding body and national governing body standards)

3. Manage and supervise students to ensure that all areas of the outdoor adventurous activities units and the outdoor storeroom is well maintained and clean; meeting health and safety requirements.

4. Manage and supervise students to ensure that all equipment within the outdoor adventurous activities is fit for purpose and meeting health and safety requirements

5. Liaise effectively with relevant lecturers and SSTs (Student Support Tutor) on the progress made by learners within the centre providing updates on skills development and details of any assessments undertaken

6. Review and develop operating systems and risk assessments in liaison with the Centre Director, Programme Manager, Lecturing staff and SSTs

7. In liaison with the SPS technician maintain equipment stock levels to ensure all equipment is fit for purpose as stated in the standard operating procedures

8. To be accountable for the health and safety of all equipment

9. To monitor all outdoor adventure equipment ensuring maintenance or replacement is carried out when required.

10. Maintaining capital equipment, semi consumables and consumable stock items within outdoor adventurous activities to ensure efficient and effective operations.

11. Undertake Health & Safety risk assessments and ensure all working practices are compliant with industry legislation (e.g. NGB guidelines)

12. To ensure that accurate records of outdoor adventurous activities equipment are kept and the data inputted onto computer systems and paper systems.

13. To follow the current outdoor adventure, sport and public services Standard Operating Procedures

14. To assist in the organisation and delivery of outdoor adventurous activities away days and residentials and ensuring the Colleges, NGBs and Safeguarding policies are followed.

15. To be accountable for the generation and achievement of income targets including sales.

16. Liaise with corporate facilities where specialist equipment is required and ensure this is undertaken

17. Ensure continuous development and improvement of professional knowledge

18. Any other duties, of a similar level of responsibility, as may be required.

Qualifications, Specialist Knowledge and Skills Qualifications
Essential Criteria

Full UK Driving Licence with D1+E entitlement (or equivalent).
A range of outdoor adventure qualification including:
- Mountain Leader.
- Single Pitch Award.
- Lowland Leader or Equivalent.
- Paddling Instructor - Canoe/ Kayak/ Paddleboard.
- UKCC Level 2 (or equivalent).
- A minimum of one higher level qualification in any discipline.
Relevant First Aid Qualification.

Experience Essential Criteria
Working in a variety of outdoor and adventurous environments including private and LEA and across a variety of age groups.
Instructing to a higher level.
Ability to deal with a flexible workload.
Experience of working within a learning support environment.

Assessing learners.
Setting up and running of DofE.
Delivering First Aid Courses.
Delivering on BEL courses.
High Quality Outdoor Education.

Specialist Knowledge Essential Criteria
Logging, maintaining and repairing where relevant specialist outdoor and adventurous equipment.
Local and national venues for outdoor adventure.
Up to date and relevant knowledge of H&S within Outdoor Adventure.

Essential Criteria
Training apprentices.
Creating a bid for a climbing wall, ropes course or similar.
Good knowledge of teamwork ability.

IT Skills Essential Criteria
Basic Level in Microsoft applications particularly Word, Powerpoint, Outlook and Excel.
Willing to undertake training appropriate to the role.
